Meet your next fashion obsession – Style Kush

Are you ready to meet your next style addiction? MyFashionStage.com met up with a super refreshing stylist/blogger Ira Otivar from Manila. A 20-something full of life fashionista shares with us her story falling into fashion and styling.

Meet Ira Otivar, the creator of “Style Kush”. She sits across from me in a coffee shop wearing a pair of grey shorts, plain white tee and a pair of fresh Nike sneakers. Her persona is very laidback. Her happy mood is infectious, it’s hard not to smile or giggle when she does.

Ira moved to Hong Kong 5 years ago from Manila, Philippines. From the offset it’s easy to see why she enjoys what she does. Before the interview we take a few snaps around Aldrich Bay Park, I ask her if she’s ever modeled before but she hasn’t, however looks effortlessly cool as she poses in front of the camera.

Use to styling behind the scenes, Ira hasn’t always been on the styling path. Studying Communication Arts over fashion design, opting for the more “practical” route as she puts it. Getting her first taste of inspiration for styling in her first job. After she graduated she worked as a “Production Assistant” on the reality TV show “Project Runway” in the Philippines.

Hi Ira, thanks for joining today. Let’s talk about your inspiration for your style, where does it come from?

Nowadays I feel music is my inspiration for my style. For example I will listen to a song and imagine if I was in the music video what would I wear. So I would interpret the song, the feel of the song into the kind of style I would want to wear. I like R’n’B and Indie music mostly.

I am inspired by certain designers/brands but sometimes I feel I cannot wear the outfit or only would wear part of it. I once told someone that the great thing about being a stylist is that I can get the model to wear the things I can’t.

How would you describe your fashion style?

My style changes a lot but I would call it simple with a little something. I usually wear black and white but I add a little color sometimes. Simple, laidback but with a little edge.

What is the name of your blog and why?

“Style Kush” is the name of my blog, the idea came from a song called “Kush and Alcohol”. “Kush” means drugs, so meaning addicted to style/fashion.

How did you get started in the fashion industry/blogging?

It just sort of happened. There are some photographers who look to collaborate with stylists but don’t necessarily have the budget, so they like to find stylists who are just starting out. I always wanted to be a stylist.

When I moved to Hong Kong, I didn’t really know anyone and I had a lot time to myself so I use to like posting photos of myself, of different outfits. I felt maybe I was posting too much on social media so I started a blog to post all my photos there. At the time it was more like a diary, but it slowly changed into a fashion blog. It then evolved from a hobby into a job. To me it doesn’t feel like a job at all.

What do you love most about being a stylist/blogger?

As a blogger I like that I get to meet a lot of new people and I get to explore more of the fashion world. Those who are not really into fashion may not understand, notice or see the things that I get to see.

As a stylist I love being inspired and motivated, I get to show my creative side. It’s a really tiring job but I really enjoy it.

What are your plans for the future?

I would like to start a styling firm, work with other stylists. I would also like to create an online shop with my mum, collaborate together as she use to create clothing before. I would like to design maybe some casual wear, everyday wear. I want to create something of my own.

Are there any trends you like/dislike at the moment?

At the moment I really dislike the really high platform shoes, originally they were from a brand Creepers by Jeffery Campbell but now there are super high versions of these shoes.

I really like sports wear. I even queued over night for the new Alexander Wang collection in H&M. I am a die-hard fan of Alexander Wang. I also really like quilted leather, one of my favorite pieces at the moment is this quilted leather jacket from Zara and really like chunky scarfs.

What is your advice for new fashion bloggers (those who want to start a blog)?

My advice would be just be yourself and don’t focus on the fame. I feel some bloggers do that, they are doing it for the fame or the freebies. Do it because you’re really passionate about it and for yourself.

Do you think there is difference between fashion bloggers or Instagrammers?

I think there is a difference, if you’re only posting outfits on Instagram you’re not a blogger. I would prefer to be called a blogger as Instagram is only a small part of that.
